Addu Atoll is the Maldives’ manta ray paradise, and arguably the best place in the country to spot these magnificent and charismatic animals. Up until quite recently, it was not very well known that mantas could be found in the Atoll, which lies at the very southern tip of the Maldives.
But find them you can: in fact, Addu is one of the few places in the Indian Ocean, and the only place in the Maldives, where you can see these beasts of the sea all year round.
Addu is also that only place in the Maldives that is home to full-sized adult Mantas, with wingspans stretching an incredible 5 meters – the length of a sedan car.
Here at the Equator Village dive school, run by Diverland, we do regular dive trips to see the manta rays. It’s not only mantas you can see in Addu – sharks, eagle rays, turtle and big reef fish are just regularly spotted here.
Addu is also home to the fabled British Loyalty wreck – an oil tanker that was torpedoed by a German submarine in 1944.
So if you are pondering where to visit in Maldives, Addu is the spot!
